Biography
Carsten W. Israel is Chief of the Department of Cardiology, Evangelical Hospital Bielefeld (Academic Hospital of Munster University, Germany) since April 2009. Prior to this appointment he was Consultant of Internal Medicine and Cardiology and Master Teacher, Department of Medicine - Division of Cardiology, of the J. W. Goethe-University, Frankfurt, Germany, where he was also Director of Arrhythmia Services - Devices. He worked at the Department of Cardiology at the University of Frankfurt from 1999-2009 and participated in many landmark trials in the field of cardiology such as PIAF (Diltiazem vs. Amiodaron), DINAMIT (ICD), ATHENA (Dronedaron), ASSERT (Schrittmacher), BEATS (Schrittmacher), AT500 (Schrittmacher), RAFT (CRT-D), PALLAS (Dronedaron), AVERROES (Apixaban), EURIDIS (Dronedaron), ABCD (ICD), VTach (Ablation), RELY (Dabigatran), AF-CHF (Amiodaron), ACT (Vernakalant), SHIELD (Azimilide),.Tedisamil-Studie, SIMPLE (ICD), OPTILINK (ICD), LINOX (ICD), OSCAR (CRT-D), ACTIVE (A, W und I,Clopidogrel/ASS/Warfarin, Irbesartan) u. a. He qualified at the Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany in 1992 and subsequently undertook internship and residencies at St. Joseph's University Hospital in Bochum, Germany. Ass. Professor Israel is the past Speaker of the Working Group on Arrhythmias of the German Cardiac Society, member of the Educational Committee of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), member of the Board of the World Society of Arrhythmia (WSA) as well as a member of other professional organizations related to cardiology and electrophysiology.
Ass. Professor Israel is Associate Editor of EUROPACE, Editor of the German medical journal Herzschrittmachertherapie & Elektrophysiologie and serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Pacing Clinical Electrophysiology (PACE). He has published extensively in major peer-reviewed clinical journals and edited a number of book titles including 2 editions of "Prophylaxis and Therapy of Atrial Fibrillation". He is a reviewer for major journals in the field of cardiovascular medicine, including Eur Heart J, Am Heart J, J of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, Heart Rhythm, J Am Coll of Cardiol, and EUROPACE. Together with his colleagues, Ass. Professor Israel started a highly successful LAA occluder program in April 2012 in Bethel, a hospital that is famous for its treatment of patients with drug-refractory epilepsia, a large stroke unit with > 2000 strokes per year, and its neurosurgery department.
